Renke He: Find your strength, find the best market.


Professor Renke He, born in 1958, studied civil engineering and architecture at Hunan University.

From 1987 to 1988, he was a visiting scholar at the Industrial Design Department of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and, from 1998 to 1999, at North Carolina State University’s School of Design. Renke He is dean and professor of the School of Design at Hunan University in China and is also director of the Chinese Industrial Design Education Committee.

Currently, he holds the position of vice chair of the China Industrial Design Association.

Q:In term of professional career development, how would young designers benefit from their participation in the international design competitions?
A:Taking part in the international design competitions means that you will be on the stage of global design, competing with the best designers from all over the world. Fortunately, if you win, it will be a great recognition of your career.

Q: In recent years, more and more independent designers and design studios start to design products. They may be less competitive compared with the big brands in terms of development, design and capital. Do you have any suggestions for them?
A: They may need to identify their unique advantages in certain design field and find the best market for them. D2C design service meets personal design needs of the customers, and it could be one of the best starting points.

Q: In order to win more awards in the international design competitions, what should Chinese industrial designer do to make their products more competitive?
A: The overall quality of the products, including materials, finishing, manufacturing, interaction, functionality, these are the fundamental issues; design cannot make a normal product better.
