Beyond Buildings (Part II)

What is beyond buildings is the images designers attach to them. Apart from the external design of buildings, the internal space design is also stressed by designers. The 2015 CGD Award winners in the “Urban Design and Public Spaces” category show how designers bring life to space with the power of design.

Lanxiu Restaurant

[Winner 2015]

This case is positioned as a mass of people's consumption, but also reflects a certain cultural theme, for the restaurant business to give more levels of cultural connotation. Therefore, in the environment and space design to take full  consideration of its unique novelty, the characteristics and advantages of the brand reflects the presence of more consumers.

Jungle& Skewers

[Winner 2015]

Jungle of Skewers is located in the Beijing Gong Ti (Workers Stadium) commercial area, where is well-known for the night life. Young, energetic, pioneering, trendyare the consumers’ keywords.Throughout a project – Jungle of Skewers of which enjoyed by the young people too, we are attempt to explore a question - howdesign can enable a space to deliver subtle messages: cordially rebellious and familiarly strange.

The floor area of this project is circa 400 sqm, comprises three main functional spaces which are dinning, kitchen and buffet. The dining area is defined by using a historic timber building relocated from a village in Shanxi province. It formsinterlinked open and semi-enclosed spaces. The dilapidated building and wild open timber windows blended the spaces with interests. Familiar special references such as ‘within thebuilding’, ‘below the window’, ‘above the truss’, provided a stage that can be remembered, can be told and can be felt.

[Winner 2015]

This is a building with more than 20 years of age. The old house has the sloping roof and it is located in the downtown of Shanghai. The designers re-design it into a modern villa space of minimalist style – injecting great vitality to the old building.

The space structure and the architectural exterior façade of the old house is not well-designed, posing a big challenge to the designer. It needs to achieve both space utility and enhanced sense of architectural design at the same time.Designers’ approach to both interior and architecture shares something in common. Through structure analysis, profilecutting, choice, reorganization of the original building, trying to remove all redundant decoration, style and color. From the landscape to the interior building, there is no interruption, nor does it have superfluous decoration, the minimalism design gives the old building a new life.

The case simplifies the redundant modeling, material and lines, but in order to avoid anempty feeling, designers add a bit of details, letting the design seems more appealing.
